Bounty Balls (Healthy Coconut Chocolate balls)

These rich and decadent Bounty balls are an easy, healthy version of the Bounty bars we loved as kids. With 5 simple ingredients, these coconut chocolate balls taste pretty much like the original, but they are made with wholesome ingredients. I warn you – don’t make too many as they are addictive, and you won’t be able to stop eating them!

Bounty Balls AKA Mouthwatering Chocolate Coconut Balls!

If you love chocolate and coconut, I am sure Bounty bars were one of your favorite sweet treats as a child! But did you know that almost 50% of each bar is made of sugar? 47.8%, to be precise!

But don’t worry! You don’t have to give up this heavenly combination! These homemade Bounty balls are a much healthier version of the real thing we loved. They are made with wholesome ingredients and a lot less sugar, but they are still mouthwatering!

They are the perfect summer treat to eat cold out of the freezer or a great alternative to Christmas cookies in the winter, and they can easily double up as an edible gift for friends and family!

Ingredients you’ll need

  • Desiccated coconut: This is going to be the heart of your bounty balls.
  • Unsweetened coconut milk: It will help to bind the desiccated coconut together. Make sure to use a canned full-fat version and refrigerate it before using it to make it nice and thick. I usually put it in the fridge the night before making these bounty balls to ensure it has the right consistency.
  • Maple syrup: Use pure maple syrup. You can also opt for agave syrup or rice syrup instead.
  • Dark chocolate: For the divine chocolate coating! The trick here is to choose real good chocolate that is low in sugar. I usually opt for either 75% or 80% cacao. Something like this chocolate, made with only 4 ingredients and with less than 9% sugar content (from unrefined coconut), is great.
  • Vanilla: I usually use a vanilla powder made from pure vanilla beans, but vanilla extract will work just as well.

How to make Bounty balls (Chocolate Coconut Balls)

  1. Add the desiccated coconut, cold coconut milk, and maple syrup to a food processor bowl. Process for a few seconds until everything is well mixed together.

  1. With the help of a spoon or using your hands, roll the mixture into small balls and place them onto a baking tray or a plate. You should be able to make around 12 balls.

  1. Place the balls in the freezer for around 10-15 minutes.
  2. While the coconut balls are resting, melt the chocolate. Break the chocolate into small chunks, and put them in a heat-resistant glass bowl. You can melt the chocolate on a double boiler, but I prefer to place it into a tall heatproof glass jar, as it makes it much easier to dip each ball into it. Melt the chocolate into the microwave at 20 second intervals, stirring each time, until silky smooth.
  3. Using a fork, dip each ball into the melted chocolate, letting any excess drip off. Place the balls to cool at room temperature on a cooling rack or baking tray covered with parchment paper. You can decorate them with a sprinkle of shredded coconut before the chocolate hardens.

  1. Keep the bounty balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freezer until you are ready to each them.

How to store Bounty balls

You can keep these healthy bounty balls in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. You can also freeze them for up to two months. Let them thaw for a few minutes before eating them, but if it’s a hot summer day, you can pretty much eat them out of the freezer.

Notes

Note 1: Use full-fat coconut milk and refrigerate it before use. I usually put it in the fridge the night before. 
Note 2: To avoid melting too much chocolate to dip the balls in, try to melt the chocolate in a small glass jar in the microwave. Or in any heat-resistant container that is tall and narrow. It’ll be much easier to dip your balls in it with a small amount of chocolate!
How to store: You can keep them in the fridge for up to 5 days. Or freeze them for up to two months. Let them thaw for a few minutes before eating them, but if it’s a hot summer day, you can pretty much eat them out of the freezer.
