Why You’ll Love It

I’ve been a fan of this avocado sauce for YEARS, as it goes with virtually everything.

And what makes it even better is the fact that it’s ready in minutes and is almost totally hands-off. Yup – it’s made primarily in a food processor (which is perfect for those busy weeks!)

The sauce itself is fresh and savory thanks to the garlic, lemon, and cilantro. But it’s the creaminess from the avocado and Greek yogurt that makes it extra special.

You can even dial up the flavor by blending in a few jalapenos or a dash of cumin.

Quick and easy!

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Avocado: Ripe avocados are a must here. Choose avocados that are firm but yield to gentle pressure. Avoid anything mushy!
  • Greek yogurt: Filled with protein and extra creamy. You can substitute it with cottage cheese or sour cream.
  • Garlic
  • Fresh lemon juice: To add acidity to the sauce. It will also help to keep it bright and green.
  • Cilantro leaves: For herby freshness. Feel free to adjust the amounts depending on your taste or substitute it for parsley, mint, or basil.
  • Salt and pepper.
Laid out ingredients of avocado sauce: Garlic, lemon juice, avocado, salt and pepper, greek yogurt, and cilantro.

Serving Suggestions

  • Poured over meat or veggies: I love this zingy sauce on grilled chicken and beef.
  • Mexican food: Try this avocado sauce on veggie-filled tacos, burrito bowls, or pulled pork sandwiches!
  • Used as a salad dressing: Add some extra water to losen it up a bit and drizzle this over a simple lettuce salad or add extra flavor to a quinoa salad. It’s also awesome in a buddha bowl.
  • Tossed with cabbage: I love using this avocado sauce in place of mayonnaise to make a coleslaw!

How to Store

This avocado sauce stores well for 2-3 days in an airtight container or mason jar, but it’s best enjoyed fresh!

To stop it from turning brown, place a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the sauce before sealing.

I don’t recommend freezing it, though. The texture and flavor will change considerably!

Ingredients

  • 1 large ripe avocado
  • ½ cup greek yogurt
  • 1 small clove of garlic
  • ½ lemon - juice
  • ½ cup cilantro leaves - or parsley
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit, and scoop out the flesh into a blender or food processor. Add Greek yogurt, garlic, lemon juice, cilantro, salt, and pepper.
  • Blend all the ingredients until smooth.
  • Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning. You can add more salt, pepper, or lemon juice if needed. Add a tablespoon or two of water or olive oil to thin the sauce, if required.
  • Use the avocado sauce immediately as a dip, spread, or topping for various dishes. If not serving immediately, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Notes

Note 1 – Customize it: Feel free to customize the sauce to your liking by adding additional ingredients such as lime juice, jalapeño for heat, or a dash of cumin for extra flavor. If you are not a cilantro lover, swap it for parsley or basil!
Note 2 – Thin it out: If you prefer a thinner consistency, add a tablespoon or two of water or olive oil while blending.
How to store: To prevent the sauce from browning, press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the sauce before sealing the container. Stored this way, it should last in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. However, avocado-based sauces are best enjoyed fresh, as they may lose their vibrant color and flavor over time. Don’t freeze it as the texture and flavor change.
