Frozen Chocolate Bananas

Chocolate-covered bananas are by far one of my favorite summer treats, especially during those hot summer days where all you want to do is eat something cold and refreshing.

You won’t believe how simple they are to make, and they look incredible! Plus, if you have kids at home, making these healthy treats is a fun way to spend an hour or so together.

They are the perfect alternative to ice cream, and the best part is that they are made with wholesome ingredients.

What more can you ask from a perfect snack?

Ingredients you’ll need

Making frozen chocolate bananas couldn’t be simpler.

All you’ll need are 3 simple ingredients:

  • Bananas: Make sure your bananas are quite ripe. The ones you see here in these pictures are still a bit green, but hey, that’s what I had in the house when I was taking pictures. I find that the perfect spot is when they start to develop some brown spots. Ripe bananas have a higher sugar content, which means they will remain softer when you put them in the freezer. This makes them easier to eat when you take them out and want to dig into them straight away.
  • Chocolate: If you want to keep this snack healthy, make sure to use dark chocolate. I find that 70% dark chocolate hits the perfect spot for me. It’s sweet, yet not too much to make me feel guilty.
  • Toppings: Here, you can simply use your imagination. There is an infinite variety of toppings you can pick from. I used shredded coconut, chopped hazelnuts and pistachio nuts, freeze-dried raspberries, cacao nibs, and almond slices. But you can also drizzle them with almond butter or peanut butter. Or cover them with any kind of seeds (sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, etc.)

How to make frozen chocolate bananas

  1. Start by cutting the bananas in half. Then add a popsicle stick into the cut end to use as a handle.
  1. Peel each halved banana. You can also peel the bananas first and then cut them and insert the popsicle stick. It works both ways, but I found that this method helps to keep the bananas in a better shape, especially if you are using overripe bananas. Do the same with all 3 bananas.
  2. Place the bananas on a baking sheet or sheet pan covered with parchment paper or wax paper and freeze them for at least 2 hours. Make sure the bananas are laid down flat and separated from each other.
  1. Put the chocolate in a small heatproof bowl and place it in the microwave, mixing and checking every 20 seconds. Alternatively, melt the chocolate in a double boiler.
  2. Dip the frozen bananas one at a time in the bowl of melted chocolate, twirl to remove the excess chocolate, and place them to dry on a cooling rack or parchment paper.
  1. Quickly sprinkle with your favorite topping before the chocolate solidifies (you really have only a few seconds here).
  1. Freeze the bananas for another 30 minutes and enjoy!

Top tips for the perfect chocolate bananas

Bananas: Make sure your bananas are ripe. This ensures the level of sugar content is optimal and, when frozen, the chocolate bananas won’t be too hard.

Chocolate matters: If you want this treat to be delicious, make sure to use good-quality dark chocolate. As I say many times on this blog, when you make a simple recipe with humble ingredients, the quality will make all the difference. And yes, you can use dark chocolate chips, but I find that a good chocolate bar is made with higher-quality chocolate.

Use a thin, tall glass or jar: To make the dipping easier, it’s a good idea to place the chocolate in a thin, tall glass. It’ll make dipping bananas much easier!

Have your toppings ready: After you dip each banana in the melted chocolate, you’ll only have a few seconds to cover the chocolate with toppings before it hardens and it turns into a chocolate shell. Chop all your seeds, nuts, and toppings ahead of time and have them ready next to you to sprinkle all over the banana before you set it aside to cool.

Use take-out chopsticks: If you don’t have popsicle sticks and can’t be bothered to buy them, you can use take-out chopsticks as an alternative.

Eat them frozen: Once ready, make sure to eat these chocolate-covered bananas while they are still frozen. If you let them defrost too much, they will turn into mush.

How to store

These frozen chocolate bananas are incredibly delicious if you eat them straight away, but they keep well in the freezer for up to a week, which makes them perfect for preparing in advance.

Simply make sure you store them in an airtight container, and you divide the different layers with parchment paper to avoid having them stick to one another.

When you are ready to eat them, remove them from the freezer a few minutes in advance, to give them a bit of time to soften slightly, or they might be a bit too hard. But be careful not to let them defrost, or they’ll turn into mush!

  1. My kids and I love to make frozen banana bites. We slice them in small rounds and pop a toothpick in them. They’re easier to eat this way. Line a cookie sheet with parchment and freeze them. Then dip, sprinkle your toppings and refreeze. After all are frozen you can put them into a gallon freezer bag and they keep for quite some time. Pro tip – we add a bit of coconut oil to the chocolate to make it have that crunchy chocolate coating. Supper yummy!
